An elegant modernist sculpture by the Belgian artist Jan Van Houtte, carved from white Carrara marble and representing a reclining female figure reduced to a harmonious sequence of soft, rounded volumes. Measuring approximately 40 × 20 cm, the work abandons conventional anatomical detail in favour of pure sculptural form, emphasising the curves of the torso, hips and limbs through a smooth, highly polished surface. The subtle natural grey veining of the Carrara marble adds depth and variation to the luminous white stone, while the composition shifts between recognisable elements of the human body and almost abstract organic forms depending on the viewing angle. The sculpture bears the artist’s incised signature/mark on the marble. Its combination of figurative suggestion, abstraction and polished Carrara marble gives the work a strong modernist character and a refined sculptural presence.
